There are two covers on the passenger side and you've identified them both but neither is the diff. cover and you can't really drain the unit by removing either of them. To access the differential cover you must get underneath the car, it is on the rearmost end of the unit just in front of the steering rack and just below the crankshaft pulley. A new gasket is a good idea but you can smear the old gasket with sealant if it is fully intact and that usually works fine.
