I'm not 100% sure, but afaik they gave up the dipstick when giving up the drain plug.
Rob,
the you'd fill up the gear box thru the check-bolt which is on the tranny case cover under the exhaust manifold:

To make sure we're on the same page, here's the RH side of the gearbox. The bolt is in the center of the side cover which is in the middle of the gearbox:

Below is the photo of what you'll see after you remove the real true differential cover. And I'd say that it's a good idea to clean the oil filter which you'll find on the inner side of the removed cover. Dismantle it and clean with gasoline. Soft brushes will be quite handy, but be gentle with that boys since it been NLS for years.
After it dries up, put it back on and fill the tranny with new oil.

You'd better not ask what oil is the best one. If still unsure, try searching this BB with keys 'honda mtf' and 'mineral GL5'.
