Robster,
Sorry, based on the first sentence in your original post I assumed that you had already looked to see if your gearbox had a drain-plug and it didn't (my bad), so I figured it had been replaced with a later unit. I should have told you to look on the bottom for the drain plug first, and an '89 unit should have one of course. As Simon says: It's on the bottom (imagine that) at the rear and is a large round headed bolt that will be turned with a 10 mm Allen key. Earlier ones were turned with a 3/8" square drive tool (like a 3/8" ratchet or breaker bar). They are all usually very tight. If it's 3/8" square drive put a large pipe wrench on the outer surface of the plug and use a cheater pipe to unscrew it. Be damn sure to turn it the right way (it's normal right-hand thread) or you'll break the gearbox! If it requires a 10 mm Allen wrench dig the crud out of the socket with an ice-pick, insert the Allen wrench and then slip a length or 1/2" iron pipe over it for leverage. I've encountered a few that were so tight that I had to heat them with an oxy-acetylene torch before they could be removed. You can't do that on a unit in the car of course (well....not safely). If you can't unscrew it you might want to consider removing the rear cover.
