I haven't sifted through all the responses above, so someone may have already covered this. The black wire is the signal wire that sends the lean/rich (0-1 vdc) signal to the LH controller (ECU).
The white wires are the heater wires for the O2 sensor. One is a ground, and the other gets 12V from the fuel pump relay any time it's energized. The O2 sensor has to be hot to work, but I think exhaust gases can eventually get it hot enough. I'm pretty sure the heater is there to get it up and running faster, but the car can work ok without it, which would explain why your car seems to run ok. The K-Jetronic cars (8 valves) had a "one wire" O2 sensor, that didn't have a heater at all.
The mating (car side) wires to the two white heater wires on the O2 sensor are blue/red (12v) and black (gnd). The connector for the heater should be near the signal wire connector, up by the recirculation valve actuator, at the R rear of the engine compt.
