Hey Fogline, glad to hear back from a fan! I've got a build thread on the Saab Rally forums going for my '80 right now. Fun stuff! I really love the super early 900s. They have a very different feel - more like a 99. Just something really classic about it. A little rougher than the newer ones and a little more of a "seat of the pants" feel.
I do have a ton of stuff to sell - been waiting till after the holidays to put up a new post. You have a couple of options for the '80. If you are looking for power, stick in a 16valve turbo engine, SPG suspension (you will have to drill the front frame for the sway bars), maybe a 2.1L intake matched to the head, T5 ignition, and some accessories like a modded APC, bigger intercooler, and the like. Depends on what class you want to race it in though.
I am not planning to race mine, so I am doing just some tasteful upgrades. I drilled and installed SPG sway bars (huge imporvement), redid the interior, redid the original 8valve B engine and turbo, installing SD lowering springs and Koni shocks, sport and rally ski plate, 16V intercooler, and a few other things. Trying to keep it simple and as much actual Saab as possible. For the brakes (I hate the early brakes), I'm thinking about putting in a full set of Wilwood calipers, pads, and rotors - these are made for racing, but also a great upgrade for street. Fronts just need spacers to fit (you can use washers), rears need an adapter. If you are planning on racing, I would consider Wilwoods. If not, it is a pretty big job I've heard and can be expensive. You also would need front hubs from an '87 900 with the vented rotors - that apparently is the only hub that the Wilwoods will fit in the front.
You can also just swap in a full hub set from an '88 or newer c900 and use the newer style brakes. That is sometimes an easier swap and definitely a great upgrade. Many have done it on this forum since it is also makes it possible to install the super aero rims from the 9000.
So you have some good options. If you want to part it out, shoot me a PM and I can put you in touch with some guys who may need some stuff. Sad to see those early '80s go though - they are getting really sparse.
