A trusted local tech listened to my story, and said that the rough running in cold/wet weather (but not cold/dry) would likely be a faulty AMM or high secondary resistance (bad spark). After ruling out the AMM, the first thing to check would be the base ignition timing. If the base timing is far enough out, the spark will have to jump too far from the rotor to the post, and this kind of spark will erode the contacts quickly. And it's more susceptible to moisture in the air gap.
The 2.1s don't have an electronic timing defeat for setting the base timing with a light. Instead, (according to other threads) the groove in the distributor housing is supposed to line up with the crack between the head and valve cover. On my car the dizzy groove was almost 10 degrees above the mark! Not sure if this would have been excessive advance or retard - anyone know?
For now I've repositioned the distributor and filed the carbon off the cap posts. The car is immediately running better, and for the first time it didn't misfire on the way to work in the rain today. Hopefully the performance will last this time. I'll report back in a little while with the results.
