Mileage is the key. If it's in the 150,000 mile (240,000 km) range then it may just have the very worn internal components that I saw so many times when rebuilding these. Mostly the forward drum clutch suffers general mechanical failure. That will initally cause slipping in all forward gears but reverse will still work. Eventually the forward clutch stops grabbing entirely and rather than partial slipping you have no forward drive at all. Adjusting the bands shouldn't really be considered as the flex band only actuates second gear, and you tell us that you have slipping in all forward gears. The other band is for reverse and "low" range only. If you are lucky the problem is fluid related and it may be worth trying a flush and refill. Of course just being low on fluid will cause slipping and the forward gears are more sensitive to this than reverse. Make sure that the throttle pressure cable is properly attached and adjusted too. Be sure the unit is filled with type F fluid too. Using Dexron (more than just a small amount) will cause poor performance and slipping. Good luck!
