I roughly discovered a way to get the engine to idle:
If I turn the air compressor on the engine revs a constant 2500 RPM (which is alarming at a stoplight!), and continues that RPM even after turning the compressor off. However, if I rev the engine a couple times at this point, maybe to 3500 RPM, it will come down and idle. If I turn the engine off, it returns to the ~2000 RPM like before, so I don't think the high idle is a factor of engine temperature. I think the ability to return the idle to normal through manipulation shows it isn't a vacuum leak.
I have the Bentley manual and will check through the LH troubleshooting. Thanks, LP. Please let me know if my discovery gives you more ideas.
