I haven't used the Superior stuff myself, but a couple friends have with great results. One turned a completely faded burgundy vert carpet to like new. The other dyed a carpet black--color change. I believe that it comes in a squirt bottle. You squirt it on to soak the carpet and then brush it in. The dye I got from the autobody store is the same, but you apply it with commercial spray equipment.
I used the RIT to try and change some OEM taupe floor mats to tan, and it didn't really work at all. Waste of time and money. I ended up using Color Bond spray instead. It is not as stiff as fabric paint, but as you said, it doesn't penetrate.
