Update on 1st time clutch replacement Posted by CBS [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I got the new slave, pressure plate, clutch disc, and resurfaced flywheel in place; put a little blue Locktight on the flywheel and slave bolts and gently slid the shaft back in place (tapped it with the side of a hammer to seat it). Unfortunately, I drove around to get it to temperature, and it started releasing prematurely with pedal pressed. And then I noticed a puddle of fluid under the slave. Bummer.
So took it to my indi -- my back was shot and the wife was complaining of the massive bruises on my forearms -- and he called back and said he thought the fluid under the slave was transmission oil. He checked the clutch master and it was leaking like crazy. What? I had just replaced the master about 300 miles ago. Anyway, the only bearings/seals I replaced were the pilot bearing and the transmission chain case rubber cover seal (the rear main seal and the transmission chain case bearing looked solid and are apparently problematic to replace for a novice).
So I guess my next steps are to have my indi replace the chain case bearing which I hope is the cause of the transmission fluid leak. And then drive it home and replace the clutch master cylinder myself (I have two new ones due to a sale at Rock Auto). Does this sound reasonable to you seasoned clutch people?
