Responses generally, and my gut, tell me it's probably going to fix up okay.

Thanks, Chris Myles, for the picture, I'll study the head for any cracks and lay a straight edge on it to check for warp.

I will take it to a shop to get new valve stem seals installed, and ask them to pressure test it.

Source of overheating is I think seepage from a bad upper radiator hose, plus driver inattention. It has a buffered temp gage (it's a 9000) so stays fixed at one low setting till heat really gets up there. And most of my trips till the one where I discovered it have been of the 5-10 mile variety with ample sitting, so it would cool down between runs.

And I was tricked into not bothering to pop the hood because the car has been running so well recently, and because it supposedly had a coolant level sender which wasn't showing any problems. But somebody had unplugged and snipped that off.
