Hello Saabsters. I have the intermittent smell of exhaust coming in while I drive in my '87T vert. I'm sure it is entering the cabin via under the dash or through the ventilation system. I cannot drive with the top up without getting gassed out, and even with the top down it is often unpleasant.
Steps I've taken:
Not feeling, with my limited skills and tools, up to doing deep exhaust work, I took it to local and only indy who works on Saabs (small town). I had found water leaks at start up coming out of all the turbo metal to metal contact surfaces, and they found that my header pipe was rusted out, also my exhaust manifold gasket was shot. So at no small expense, they replaced my header, all the gaskets around the turbo, exhaust manifold gasket, and resurfaced turbo joints and sprayed high temperature copper stuff in between resurfaced metal on turbo.
I drove it for a day and still found intermittent exhaust coming in through vents dangit (more at high speed I think), and water is still coming out of supposedly resurfaced joints at start-up (WTF? didn't I pay to have that not happen?). They are not offering to do anything except maybe try a different kind of gunk in between those metal to metal surfaces, or replace entire turbo ($500 plus labor), all of which I will need to pay for...they spent a long time disassembling my turbo due to rusted out bolts; several hours of labor. Frustrating to be $1K in and facing more with same symptoms in play. I have liked these guys, I think they are honest, but they should have warned me there was a chance the turbo would still leak before I sunk many hundreds in that job.
At this point I'm not even sure that I believe that will totally solve the problem, as nasty air from the engine compartment is coming into the cabin...why not make sure cabin is sealed? To address this I tested and found that the rubber flange that connects to the vent holes on top of hood was not fully contacting the the metal plate of the climate control box; to fix this I built up that surface with several layers of foam double sided tape, the flange appears to sit tightly now and seal...still, exhaust comes in sometimes. Also there is a hole in the fire wall over by the master cylnder on the drivers side, one vacuum hose going through...I plugged that up. Still, the cursed smell.
Any tips out there on sealing up the cabin? I can't afford to pay those guys to not fix it anymore, and I definitely am not okay with the pollution in my fac
Also, does anybody think it would be worth it to get in there and try to reseal the metal to metal turbo surfaces using some kind of thicker high temp goo than the spray on stuff they used? Hylomar, or some kind of permatex something?
Thanks very much.
