When speaking about the rear cover on the flywheel side there's a rear main seal. There are 2 major spots that oil will leak from the trans/motor even right after a rebuild that will look like the leak is coming from the trans gaskets. One is behind flywheel, the engine crank shaft seal. This seal is very hard to remove some diy'ers use a hard metal object like a screwdriver, utility knife, what ever is at their disposal to get the seal out. What's not being considered when tring to remove this seal is accidentally scoring the metal under the seal. One good deep cut in the metal where the seal is seated will cause a leak here even with the new seal installed. Most will skip replacing this seal because of its brutal nature. But if not replaced it will start to leak and when it dose it looks like the trans gasket is leaking.
The 2nd spot is the shifter shaft seal. This one never gets replaced and will leak a steady stream down the back of the trans (rear cover) making it look like the trans rear cover gasket is leaking and/or the trans to motor gasket is leaking.
There is a third place on the back of the transmission. The center post that connects the motor to the trans is secured with a nut. This nut can go missing after many miles which might possibly start a leak from the center of the rear trans from the motor to trans gasket.
