With the eight bolts removed you should be able to push the torque convertor into the transmission about 1/2 inch or more creating a gap between it and the flex plate. Be sure you've removed all the engine to transmission bolts too, there is one that at the extreme rear (so by the flex plate) that goes down through the locating sleeve on the passenger side that's often overlooked.
