SOLVED! Solenoid connector needed insulation. 1 Saabers Like This Post! I tried another solenoid as suggested. Still didn't work. But I was trying to activate it by attaching the bare wires to the poles on the solenoid. So I then attached some insulated connectors to the wires and eureka, it now clicks. So the problem was actually that the insulation in the connector to the solenoid had broken down and was not allowing the solenoid to activate.
I will solder and heat shrink the insulated connectors later this week.
Thanks for all the help with this one. I'm a happy man. Lot's of lessons learned with this.
I'm now moving on to working out why the front passenger park/side lights aren't working....
