I rebuilt the slave on my last clutch job and it worked out surprisingly well.
I used to have a bias against cylinder rebuilds (masters and slaves) until my second-to-last clutch job a couple of years ago. The new slave was bad out of the box (I forget the brand but it was labeled "Genuine Saab") and caused me some grief in the weeks after install. The problem wasn't apparent in the driveway but over the course of the first few days with the new clutch, the pedal got softer and softer despite repeated bleeding. The slave wasn't executing a full stroke.
Had to replace it amidst a lot of grumbling and reflection.
I then read here how people were reporting good results with rebuilds vs. replacements. If there's no visible metal-on-metal wear, the unit could be a candidate for new seals. New replacements may not have the same quality of manufacture as the earlier cylinders (you can browse the archives here for more on it).
So the next one I did was a rebuild rather than replace.
I'm still undecided about clutch master cylinder rebuilds. I have some new spares in stock that extend that decision pretty far into the future.
Swapping in new seals in the slave is a breeze. And it's a lot cheaper.
I vote "rebuild."
