New BOSCH SR32X reman starter, going in.... Posted by DET17 [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: No joy..... ignition ON, straight wire jumper to SOL, no rotation, Bernie ![]() ![]() |
I had forgotten what a PITA these starter installs are. For those who follow:
1. two primary mount bolts have 14mm hex head (behind plastic flywheel cover)
2. flanged nuts are 17mm; the tight confines of the starter recesses won't allow a 1/2" drive socket to slide into the space due to wall thickness. The only socket of mine that would fit was a 12 point 3/8" drive (and it barely fits)
3. Intake support bracket needs removed in order to extract the starter on my turbo car. Perhaps if you have an NA version and there oil cooler hoses are not used (can't recall), then you might be able to leave this bracket in place.
4. Due to the age of my flywheel / clutch area plastic cover, I removed all the fixing bolts so I didn't have to bend the plastic and risk fracturing the plastic. I'm sure some would wedge a 14mm box wrench in between the cover and aluminum plate, but I chose not to.
5. In order to gain access to the bolts and nuts 1. and 2. I removed the intercooler and all associated pipes. I'm sure pro wrenches don't do this but I did. Things sure are packed in that corner of the engine bay!
6. Finally, pulled the air cleaner assy. and charge hose bringing the cooler outside fender air into same.
7. The starter end support bracket is also a PITA especially with a turbo. Pair of M12 hex caps anchoring into red block iron and at 90*s a minuscule pair of M8 nuts attaching to the starter itself. These little babies can easily be overtorqued, but also need to be tight. wrenching in between the intake runners is lots of fun.... my large hands had no chance at the inboard M8 nut.... through the runner was the only hope for me.
Planning to pull the fuel fuses and crank this starter before I reinstall any of the remaining goods.
