Engine/transmission Rebuild Tips (w/out knowledge of their condition) Posted by mb [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I acquired a b202 engine from a 88 900 Turbo to install in my 86 turbo hatchback, but I do not know the condition of the engine. The previous owner said that the engine had no problems and has about 200k miles on it. It has been sitting with oil it (and said be otherwise property stored) for several years.
This is a project car, so I planned to take the opportunity of having the engine out to do a complete rebuild. But after reading tips on this forum, I am now considering a partial tear-down to clean and refresh the components (including transmission), rather than a complete rebuild as these engines are strong.
Can I do compression, leak-down, and oil pressure tests on this engine with it out? Tips on how? What other tests can I do with it out to check the condition?
If the tests suggest that the engine is in good shape, what are some tips to refresh it and the transmission (new gaskets, accessories, turbo upgrade, transmission, etc.)? I found some good tips here, which I plan to follow as well. https://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/900/index.html?bID=458902
I plan to do a T5 conversion in the process.
The 86 that will receive the 88 engine and transmission has 150k miles on it and has been mostly stored in a garage for the past decade. I am still inventorying the condition, suspension, etc.
Gear box: GM 556 02
