Wheel bearing replacement notes & more help

Just to followup on my earlier post seeking help on getting a stuck wheel bearing out of the steering knuckle, the answer was a big hammer. Tom Townsend suggested that I pound on the outer bearing hub at about 12:00 with a big hammer - this only succeded in separating the two bearing halves. I decided that I really needed to get the tie rod end removed to get better access and noticed that the bearing began to loosen when I pounded on the knuckle to release the tie rod end. One more good whack to the knuckle finally released it - I guess the vibrations, etc. transmitted through the knuckle got the rust to give up its grip.
Now the help part again - I went to install the new bearing and it separated in the middle! I figure it was defective - I wasn't hitting anything hard at the time; it just fell apart. I was having some trouble figuring out how to get the CV axle shaft back through the new hub & bearing; it really didn't want to go. Suggestions for installing the new hub on the axle shaft?
