Hi Pigeon, I did the right front bearing on my 86 and it was a piece of cake. I unbolted everything, tierod, strut and ball joint. The bearing was rusted in the spindle/steering knuckle but a couple of wacks with hammer/piece of pipe at the bench freed it up. The old bearing had 3-5mm of horizontal play in it.
That bearing is defective if it seperated while trying to install it. As for getting the axle shaft back in this is what I did. I got it to start in the hole(nothing is bolted up), then using some muscle push up on the spindle, then loosely bolt the 3 small ball joint bolts, do the 2 strut bolts and the axle just slide in. It is possible that my inner/outer drivers have more play in them then yours causing less difficulty for me. I'm assuming you greased the spline also. I hope this helps
Brian
