oil pump o-ring & main seal & loosening bolt Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Where's that oil pump o-ring?, Quasi, Mon, 21 Jan 2002 13:16:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I don't know about the '94's, but on earlier cars, the oil pump O-ring is the seal between the oil pump and the timing chain cover. You undo about 10 or so bolts and pull the oil pump off. The oil pump is nothing more than a machined housing with two gears in it. There is a groove running around the outside of the mating surface of the housing, and the O-ring fits into it.
I had a heck of a time keeping the O-ring in place - I ended up using a little Hi-Tac - just a form of gasket cement - to keep it in place when I reassembled everything.
As to the main seal, I had to replace mine since it was leaking. But I make sure the seal goes into a DIFFERENT place than the original. That way the seal bears on a non-worn portion of the shaft. If I put it in exactly the same place, the seal would be running on a worn part of the shaft - probably why the old seal was leaking in the first place.
As to getting the bolt loose, I use the Townsend method for the 900. I stick the socket on the nut with a big breaker bar hanging down, and turn the key to START for just a second. The breaker bar whangs against the lower A-arm. I hop out, make sure the socket is still seated properly, and do it again. I may take a dozen or so tries. but it works pretty well. Before I do that, I take a few precautions - I start the car and pull the fuel pump fuse until the engine quits - now I now the fuel pressure is too low for the engine to start. I also pull the high tension wire out of the spark coil. In the case of DI, I'd disconnect the DI cable.
To tighten, I stick a screwdriver into the flywheel teeth. I've found it takes a lot less torque to properly tighten the bolt than it takes to loosen it.
Good luck!
