After leaving my post, I was unable to see your answers until now. I found all the information helpful. For those reading for the first time, its a 92 9000T that broke its timing chain yet didn't appear to damage any valves, Saab wanted to install new used engine for $3500-4000, we decided to fix ourselves. I have taken a little from each. I felt replacing the engine was not the way to go. My time is not being counted as a cost and I already had everything apart. The point about not knowing what you have with a used engine worries me also. However, I am not comfortable just putting the head back on even though the valves appeared fine. I decided to remove the two valves that had hit lightly and try lapping them in to see if the ground lap edge appears even. If it does I will not replace anything in the valve train. If they appear uneven, then I will replace just those two valves. (about $18 each) At the timing chain end, I am replacing the timing chain, balance chain, balance crank sprocket, pivot guide, and crank guide, and thermostat all seals o rings etc. I also need to put a used valve cover on as the original had a hole punched in it when the chain let go. I think the owner was very lucky, and that when the chain let go the cams were in the best possible position that only caused two exhaust valves to hit so lightly. I theorized that without the forced drive of the cams by the chain, the cams were free to move in any direction when the contact occured minimizing the damage. I also wondered if the hydraulic lifters help because they could compress during the hit. Braking the chain seems like it might be better than jumping a tooth or two. In any event, he was lucky. Total parts including the head set was $227 from eEuroparts.com We are in the process of putting back together now.
