With this discussions of timing/balance chain I just had a thought why there may be excessive sprocket wear and breaking chains. When we replaced the chain components in the 92 9000 the balance chain idler sprocket bushing showed polishing in one side only, about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way around, rather strange for a bushing that rotates. At the time we were puzzled as to why it would show wear only part way around, but in the heat of the repair we put it back in. If the tensioners are showing excessive wear then something is jerking it around like an out of round sprocket. An out of round idler sprocket would have wear like we saw. Take a good look at your idler sprocket bushing, I'd like to know what the wear pattern looks like. Checking all the sprockets for roundness with a dial indicator might be a good idea.
As to the apparent minimal valve damage, if the cam chain broke on the tension side there would be nothing to keep the cams turning except for inertia. I'll just about bet you the valves are bent, it doesn't take much. Pour solvent in the port and see if it shows up on the other side of the valve, if it does the valve is not sealing well.
