Hi Alex!
Here's a few comments:
>I was under the impression these chips would increase boost to 1.5 bar
>(21.75 PSI).
No, you're "only" getting to around 1.0 - 1.3 bar, depending on the upgrade!
>At 1.5 bar, 6000 RPM, wide-open throttle, the 2.3L Saab engine will flow >about 33 Lbs/min of air.At 1.0 bar, in the same conditions, it will flow
>about 27 Lbs/min. On the stock 0.5 bar, it will flow about 20 Lbs/min.
Stock 0.5 bar!? The full blown 2.3-engine is working at 0.9 bar. The lpt is at 0.45 bar.
>Running 1.0 bar on the OEM T3 turbo is pushing the limit of the turbo's
>abilities. Ever wonder why it glows bright orange?
ALL turbo-engines will have glowing turbo's under full working load, no matter the bar's!
>The Swedish performance companies supply upgraded turbos not where they
>are needed, but where you are willing to drop the cash on one. They can't
>include an upgraded turbo in a $200 kit, that'd be crazy.
Not true. In the $200 kits you mention, the upgrade isn't supplying so much power (pressure), that upgraded turbo's are needed. Only when you push the power even more (in the more expensive kits), the turbo's are included - also within the price!
The Swedish performance companies uses a LOT of time and money developing these upgrades, therefore they also do a lot testing, what is needed and what is not!
Personally I had a 1985 900 T16, which was upgraded with a new fuel-chip, 3" frontpipe (from turbo), an open K&N-filter and an upgraded APC-box with variable boost (up to 1.5 bar). The engine had run more than 120,000 miles, when I put the upgrade on the car. I had the car for 35,000 miles and NEWER had a problem, being it with the cyl-head, the headgasket nor with the turbo. Oh, and the turbo was the original Garrett T03.
Cheers!
