I like the Golf a lot as a car, but they're a mixed bag in terms of reliability. Comsumer Reports likes them one year and not the next. VW's of the mid-ninties cut a lot of corners quality-wise and yet I have seen some with 200,000 and they look pretty good. They can be pretty expensive to have serviced at the dealer, but if you shop around you can save a lot (just like on a Saab.) I used to be a diehard VW fan in the eighties and early nineties but have gotten away from owning them. I did work selling the new generation VW's during 2001 and thought they were pretty good cars. I'm less sure about the previous generation like you are looking at. $8,000 is a very good price on that car. Wholesale on the base car with no options is $6650, and retail runs from $8,600 to $9875 depending on the options. For what it's worth, that same 8K would put you in a '96 900 turbo or a 97 basic 900 which is a lot more car and costs comparible money to maintain. In short, the VW is certainly a good car, I just don't know for certain if it's a great car. It would definately be nicer to drive than something Japanese. Good luck.
