The existence of independent repair shops does not necessarily say anything about reliability. For Saabs, it means that the dealers don't do an adequate job. This has certainly been my experience. Saabs are different enough that the mechanics at the dealership, who may work on six different car makes, don't know the brand well enough.
Not sure why there are so many Subaru shops. I don't really know the brand.
Japanese cars can't hold a candle to Saab in crashworthiness. Laboratory crash tests don't tell the whole story. Were you aware that the government will place the front seat mid-way on its track for the test, not at the position required for a person of average height or any such sensible measure? So many automakers make their tracks extra long. Ever try sliding a seat all the way back in an American car? You'd think the car was made with Wilt Chamberlain as their model. Look instead at real world injury and death data.
Japanese cars do have reliability on their side, but really only under 100k miles. If you intend to go substantially above this, look to Sweden. Oh, and Consumer Reports knows nothing, so just ignore them. Gee, I'm not opinionated, am I?
