Let me guess, the golden cylinder was right next to the battery box.
Yes, that is the fuel filter. Interestingly enough, right below the fuel filter is the ABS pump. I have seen where the fuel filter is installed too low, and the case of the filter presses on the ABS pump. This transmits the sound of the pump into the battery box, which amplifies the noise. It can be pretty loud. Simply sliding the filter up (it's held in with a metal strap) about one inch solves the problem.
If it is the fuel filter resting on the ABS pump, I would expect the sound to be there for about 30 seconds when you first start the car, then go away. It would come and go intermittently, usually after you've used the brakes a couple of times. It wouldn't be constant.
If it's there constantly, then it probably isn't the ABS pump. It may be something from the transmission.
