You can find plenty of discussion on this subject in recent posts. I am of the belief that Saabs automatics are no better or worse than any other automatics. There are many people on this board who have gotten 200,000 miles plus from their automatics (I have 145,000). Conversely there are plenty of people who have had problems with their 5 speeds at 100,000 and sooner. And yes there are occassional examples of transmissions of both types that were obviously defective from the factory. But I think it truly boils down to how you drive it and how you take care of it. Lets face it, Turbo Saabs appeal to people who like to drive hard and that factor has more to do with the bum rap automatics get than anything else. Turbo Saabs put out close to 250 foot pounds of torgue which is better than a lot of V8's and there are very few transmissions that will stand up to that for as long as Saabs transmissions do. I'm in the car business and I see every kind of car you can name with transmission trouble in the vacinity of 100,000 miles. Toyotas and Hondas, Mercedes and BMW, sticks and autos, they all have problems if they aren't TREATED RIGHT. The one problem Saab automatics have is that if you nail it at around 35mph you can sometimes catch the transmission napping and it bangs it hard. The solution? Don't do that. Roll the throttle in when you pull away from a light, let it move 15 feet before you hit full throttle, don't slam it wide open. Unless you're racing for pick slips, there's no reason to do drag racing type starts.
