When it comes to replacement parts, you can't go wrong with Saab OEM. That said, I usually don't get Saab OEM. I usually save a few bucks and go with some quality aftermarket stuff from places like Sobstory. I stay away from the semi-metallic pads, but that's personal choice.

I did some road-course racing a few (OK, more than a few) years back, so I have some clue about performance versus 'street' brakes. Personally, I'm quite happy with the performance of the stock Saab braking capability. Steel brake lines will 'stiffen' up the pedal some, but frankly, the pedal feel on the 9000 is a bit strange to begin with, due to the 'interesting' way the master cylinder is designed. If I needed to replace the lines, I would replace them with steel, but (again, personal bias) I wouldn't go out and replace perfectly good stock ones.

As to rotors, again, I've never had a fading problem with the stock vented rotors in street driving. Slotted and/or drilled rotors are more fade resistant, and may have better bite, but if I run into fading in street driving, I should modify my driving behavior before I get arrested. As to bite, the limiting factor isn't the brakes, it's the tires.

If you're looking to upgrade the car, you can't just upgrade one component and expect to see a big improvement. Upgrading the brakes without upgrading the tires is a waste, and if you've got that much better tires, you'll need wider rims, and probably some other suspension mods.

However, if you've got a plan to make system level upgrades (i.e. entire suspension), then starting with the brakes won't hurt.
