OK, I hope you guys can help me out here. I just got my first SAAB, it is an '89 9000CDT. This is an Arizona car that spent it's first New England (non)winter here in Boston with no problems. Today it's 90 degrees out and the AC in the car is blowing hot air at me. The killer is that the AC has been working lately when I get in the sun heated car, even though the outside temp has been cool. So the AC was working yeterday, today it's 20 degrees warmer and I get nothing but heat. I've been reading up on this board and it seems that there are many possibilities, but I have some specific questions.
1.) If the fan at the very front of the car in front of the radiator is not spinning while the AC is active, is that a cause of what I am seeing?
2.) The car was fogging up badly this winter and my mechanic had to manually open a 'flap' to let outside air in because the recirculation setting on the ACC was having no effect. Given that the car can't recirculate cabin air due to the 'flap' being jammed in the open position, can this explain what I am seeing ?
3.) The car says to 'Check Radiator Level' lately and the coolant in the tank is right at the LOW line. I plan to get a flush and fill soon, but could this have anything to do with the AC problem?
I guess what I am getting at here is this: is it possible that a problem in my AC system would only be revealed when the outside temp is very hot, or is it just an ironic coincidence that it failed today ? The reason I mention that this is an AZ car is because it indicates to me that the AC systems have probably been serviced regularly. The ACC system in general is very responsive temperature setting wise, so I don't think the cabin sensor is having problems. I just need to know where to start in diagnosing this. And thanks in advance... I really appreciate it.
