I started driving on a 900 base auto. I've since driven an spg and now a 92 9kt 5spd. The 9kt has superior handling to the base 900, but the 900 has such nicely communicative steering. I recently drove my old 900 and found myself comfortable putting it sideways (I know this is not the type of imagery you want in your head right now) on the dirt roads I live on and drifting around a clover leaf.
But the complete lack of power of the 900 non turbo 2.0l is a liability. It is hard to merge, it's a dog off the line, and it revs to high for comfortable highway cruising. I constantly found myself with my foot to the floor trying to get it to move. Maybe 2.3 liter 9000 non turbo is the way go. The weight isn't much greater than the 900 but the torque is generous and the 4 speed auto is a big improvement
