Use the stands, use the jack, use your head

God can't help you if you're stupid, so use the tools at hand. The stands should do fine if properly placed. The subframe or suspension attachment points are the best bet. Leave the jack in a central place as a backup, and make sure the bleed valve is closed. And check it all out before you get under there - shake it vigorously from the side if you want, to make sure it's solid. I get under mine all the time when it's supported by my plastic ramps (I don't know what they're made of, but it's not metal). The stands and ramps are fine, just make sure you position everything properly.
