Some of the earlier (pre-CS) hatchbacks and CDs had a plastic trim between the lights that, in my opinion, didn't look good when new, and looks pretty bad when faded or cracked.
This can be removed. I believe it is replaced with a narrow metal panel (that just sits near the top of the hatch or boot/trunk lid). This panel is the same colour as the rest of the car.
Both my '87 2.0T and my '90 2.3CDT had this metal panel rather than the "rainbow" plastic panel.
The later cars, like my '96 Aero, all have a plastic trim panel on the rear, but the orange is smoked and there is no white (clear). Although I didn't like it much before I started looking for an Aero, I think it looks fine now.
