Hello Everyone,

The colloquialisms known as "rice" or "riced out," (or whichever iteration you choose) originated at a web site called "http://www.riceboypage.com."

An Asian American man runs this page.

It is designed to make fun of people who add tacky and/or flashy modifications to their cars in order to draw attention and make them appear "high performance" even though they are not. If you go to the page, you will find that the designer originally used the term "rice" because the vast majority of these cars are Japanese imports. It does not refer to the ethnic background of the people who drive the cars.

For example - adding a gigantic spoiler and "Type-R" or similar cheesy decals to an otherwise unmodified Geo Prism.

Also - Adding a loud and obnoxious "coffee can" muffler to a stock economy car under the guise of improved performance.

Over the years, the use of the term "rice" has expanded and evolved into an all encompassing, and often derogatory categorization of anyone who chooses to modify their car's appearance without improving performance.

Rarely, the term becomes plainly racist and insulting when it expands to the point of describing an 'Asian person driving an import,' rather than ANY person driving a car with tacky pseudo-performance add-ons.

So...Dinger is suggesting that simply changing the color of corner lights is "rice."

I disagree. Changing the color of corner lights does not make a Saab "riced out." Although you may consider it tacky, you couldn't possibly suggest that it implies increased performance.

It is unfortunate that the term "rice" in this context is circumstaitally associated with Asian people, because the trend that it satirizes is UNIVERSALLY tasteless.

For Example this is similar to making fun of fools who walk around with baggy pants hanging off (or below) their ass, with their boxers showing, hat turned sideways etc. Now...if I make fun of these people and, in doing so, refer to this as "homey style," people might be offended if they consided it a racial slur referring to African Americans. The association is there, regardless of my intentions.

The lines between racism and satire are very blurry, especially on an international, technical bulletin board like this one.

Let us all remain cautious and well informed!
