What I am attempting to do is educate you a little as to the effects of your opinions and terms. It's not the word you used, it's how you used it. Very important distinction.

Example: If I used the word 'wing-nut' to describe a type of mechanical fastener, perfectly innocent. If I used it to describe someone who I disagreed with, maybe not so innocent, nice or 'PC'.

If you used the word 'rice' to describe what you had for dinner, again, perfectly innocent. But, that's not what you said.

It ain't fascism. I never called you a Nazi or a bigot. I am not trying to humiliate you. I told you that there are people in the world who take offense at the terms you use. We do a lot of education on this BB. One of the great things about the internet is that it is universally accessable, given a small investment (or not even - at public libraries - our tax dollars at work). Given that, it is very educational and brings a multitude of learning opportunities, opinions and varied points of view.

I have been completely and absolutely WRONG about some of the things that I have posted here, and people have very kindly and diplomatically corrected me ("Sorry, must disagree...", "Not quite right", "almost there", etc.), which is what initially I was trying to do with you. It's great to be right, but it isn't always the case.

And of course words have power! Look at the conversation we're having. Language is our basis of communication, our common thread, our connection. It is the tool that empowers you to tell me how to fix my car from wherever you are to wherever I am. It is the words of the people on this BB that have empowered me to feel that I can do pretty much anything mechanically, electrically and physically to improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of my Saabs.

It is, in itself, powerful that we can use words to have this conversation across many miles and quite publicly about important differences of opinion concerning 'big questions' such as the use and limits of language.

It can also be used to drive us apart, to seperate 'me' and 'thee'.

You are perfectly free to use whatever terms you like, within the confines of what Saabnet considers acceptable language (so even there you and I are both accepting voluntary limits on the words we use in order to enjoy this discourse). Conversely, I am free to inform you if I think something is offensive based on my experiences and world view. The big difference is, that if you or I offended the TSN webmaster, we would simply disappear ('thread will expire'). In this case, we get to hash it out.

And, the community at large is free to follow our discourse and decide for themselves! Ain't the internet grand?
