... sounds like you need a new transmission! And it sounds like you have a good, trustworthy mechanic (darned hard to find!).
OK, if you're broke, you probably should look at a used one (and being non-turbo makes a difference - cheaper, probably more available, less likelihood of abuse). For a non-turbo, I would think you could pick one up for $500 or less. Considerably less, if you had lots of time, but you don't have time. I'd refuse to pay more than $500. A 91 or 92 will work for sure, and I think any 88 to 92 will work. Assuming that you drive reasonably, most used trannies should be fine. Worst case, 2nd gear would grind on fast shifts, but I have to assume you're not racing.
As for the clutch: The disc, slave cylinder and release bearing just have to be replaced at this point. And it would be pretty silly not to replace the pressure plate at $125 or so while you're in there. You're looking at another $500 or so there, but if you can get a used trans, the whole thing would be less than the $1600 you were looking at originally.
You either have to commit to this and do it right, or bail. Maybe bailing is the right thing to do. Depends on what you want, and a lot of other things. E-mail me if you want ... see link below (e-mail is on the Home page).
