which makes them, by definition, trucks. Therefore, I personally cannot think of them as overblown station wagons. In truth, I would be relieved if that's all that they were.
A ladder frame is like a sled, flat on the bottom and curved upward on either end. This contributes to the tendency for SUVs to plow "up and over" smaller cars upon impact, meaning that if an SUV hits you from the side its bumper is going to hit your shoulder and/or head before anything else. So instead of the engine falling to the ground upon impact (like in any well designed unibody car), the engine ends up in your lap. Nice!
Furthermore, travelling 60mph in an SUV is percieved similarly to 40mph in a car because of the height differetial.
