Oil is not a renewable resource, and this argument treats it as if it is. Once we use up the oil that's under our soil, there's nothing to do but buy it elsewhere. And if they refuse - ? Without an energy policy which recognizes that someday, the oil will become truly scarce, we will end up killing for that oil. Some would say we already have.
The maximum rate of flow of oil out of ANWR would be equal to what we would save with a very modest increase in average fuel efficiency of our vehicles. However, that is seemingly an unacceptable solution. I say we leave the oil where it lies, and if we need it in the future because we forgot to develop an energy policy for when the oil runs out, it will buy us a little time. What's wrong with buying overseas oil at our current low prices? Compared to the $1 and gallon we paid in about 1980, it's a bargain.
The proposal to drill ANWR is nothing more than a scheme to get a few people rich. It will do nothing but delay the inevitable.
