There's no good reason to remove the evaporator and the housing holds the fresh air filter. Once you unpjug the compessor power at the compressor, the ACC will assume the compressor is dead, so that isn't a problem. I think it's better than pulling the fuse as you don't know if there is some other doohickey on that circuit.
Once you have the hoses and such out, you can move the evaporator housing enough to get the blower w/o removing the wiper motor. Think about a heater core while you're there. And clean the top of the drains while you're in there...
