Are you sure you have spark? Did you check by removing a plug and setting on a ground, cranking the engine, and have someone actually see the ark? The biggest thing most people overlook is the condition of the cap and rotor. I had a fried tow his car from Colorado to Ct. and all it was, was a bad cap!
As far as the timing is concerned do a basic static time, find tdc on the crankshaft damper, which should coincide with cyl #1 at the top of the compression stroke, but be carefull, it also coincides with the top of the exhaust stroke. If you have never done this before, determine which is cyl #1 (usually the one closest to the radiator on an I6 motor), with the valve cover off, determine which is the intake, and exhaust valve, and turn the engine with a big wrench or something on the main crank nut. Watch the valves as you turn the engine, the strokes go as such- intake - compression - power - exhaust. After your intake valve goes up and down, watch for the tdc mark on your crank to come around. There should also be an arrow attached to the block somehow (I'm not familiar with your layout) that you will line up to your tdc mark on the crank. Once that is done check the position of your distributor it should be pointing roughly to the cyl #1 wire. I say roughly because most engines fire at about 8-10 degrees BTDC.
If you have spark and fuel it should fire, decreased compression will not help, but it should still fire. If compression is a concern, go to the parts store and buy a cheap ($5.00) compression testor. Also I would recommend that you ditch the Chiltons and get a Haynes manual for your car.The two don't even compare- you'll never buy a chiltons' again, I guarentee it!

Sorry to answer you in simplistic terms here, but I don't know how much basic engine theory you know.
