Paul,
Loss of fluid usually means a bad slave cylinder. Less frequently, there could be a leak in a hose or something, or the master could be leaking around the "rear" seal (fluid would come out around the pushrod).
The timespan of the failure is not a good indicator of which component has failed - each case is different.
