using a timing light. Turning the distributor relatively small amounts can be a huge change in actual timing advance. Also, I wouldn't recommend advancing it higher than stock unless you have a modified distributor diaphragm, or some way to control detonation significantly better (ie much better intercoolr, or water injection).
Don't quote me on this, but my memory seems to be saying that to advance timing, you turn the distributor counter-clockwise, or away from the windshield. Just make a small mark of the original location, if you aren't going to use a light, and turn by very small increments.
