Use a timing light, because-- Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: ADJUSTING timing......................................., 9000t driver, Wed, 5 Jun 2002 16:24:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You want to put a timing light on, and see what your timing is now. I'm not sure what problem is making you want to advance your timing, but it makes good sense to first know that the timing is set to spec. The spec varies, but look at the decal in the engine compartment. It's usually around 16 degree Before Top Dead Center (16 BTDC)
If it's set to spec and you want to advance it, (spark sooner), turn the distributor so you see 17 or 18 degrees with the timing light.
Why you don't want to do this without a timing light:
-You don't know if the timing is even right as the car is. Don't try for performance improvements until you've got stock right.
-You won't know how much you've advanced it. It doesn't take much rotation to get a lot of timing change. How will you know how much you've advanced it if you can't measure it?
-You won't be able to get back to where you are now. Yes, you could put some marks on the distributor and head, but that's not very accurate. And you still wouldn't know if it was right.
-If you turn it too much, the engine won't run, and then you'll need trial and error to get the engine to run again, much less run right.
A cheap timing light is worth the money.
