oil pump/oil pressure failure

i've just replaced the timing chain, balance chain, crankshaft sprockets, and oil pump oil seal on my wife's 93 2.3 normally aspirated 9000cs. primed the oil pump with vasaline(which looked fine to my untrained eye and no worse than any other saab pump i've ever had reason to check).
filled engine with 10w-30 cranked the starter and got the oil pressure light to go out. then i started engine. noticed noisy lifters after about 15 seconds and a quick check revealed a flickering oil pressure warning light. shut it down. opened pump and and saw nothing unusual. lubed the gears with vasaline and closed it back up. started engine again. absolutely no oil pressure!!!. shut it down again. can't imagine that complete bearing failure would occur that quickly. checked archives and found people with similar problems, but, nothing that seems to explain my problem. oh, and i also replace the o ring that fits between the oil pan and the timing cover. i really thought i had this thing covered.
anybody with any ideas?
thanx, omo
