You didn't get the pump seal in backwards or have the O-ring get pinched. Also there are an O-rings between the chain cover and pan, and pan and the oil pickup tube. Any air leak on the suction side of the pump can cause loss of pump prime. Remove the oil pressure regulator to check see if it stuck open. One idea to clean the oil pickup screen was to drain the oil, put the plug in, and put a can of Reslone or other engine cleaner in with enough to cover the pickup screen. Let sit for a day or few, then train solvent and refill with oil. This may dissolve some of the crud on the sceen and unfortunately it may lossen crud elswhere. I would only idle the engine a 1/2 hour or so while monitoring the oil light, then drain the oil and change the oil and filter. Or best to connect a oil pressure gauge to see what is happening through all this.
