I too doubt if the K&N/M1 change could make a 4mpg difference in mileage, unless the original filter was clogged and the oil much thinner than the old. I'm not telling Jason he's crazy, but there might be another factor involved: the advent of warmer weather. Gas mileage will increase as temperatures increase, and mine has been increasing lately, too.

I'm going about three years per cleaning, about 45k miles, and that should be okay. K&N claims the element filters better as it gets dirtier, though I'm confident flow characteristics will increase or even stay the same.
