I get no noticeable boost taper on my 2.3 automatic, now that all the bits seem to be working properly. Of course, I get less boost in the first place but (with JT exhaust) the needle whips across into the yellow/red section and simply stays there while my right boot is applied. This seems to apply in an English summer, whatever that is.
The thing that finally get rid of tapering boost, after changing out the BPS solenoid and the BPC valve, was a new DI cassette. So your primary suspect, ignition, was the culprit.
However, in cold weather the car goes even better with improved volumetric efficiency. It also goes better if it's clean, but this is a well-known, scientifically proven phemomenon.
