All the 900 and earlier cars used and inline engine configuration. The 9000 is the first transverse configuration. That makes for a lot of differences right there.
I don't think the book you got will be of much use.
If you want to rebuild a 9000 tranny, you'll need a good manual specifically for that transmission. There are many critical details, like shim sizes, allowable runout, etc., that are specific to that transmission. With a manual like that, your pre-1980 900 manual won't be of much use.
However, I love old manuals, and pick them up even if I have no intention of ever doing the work. Heck, I've picked up manuals for cars I've never owned, and never intend to, just because they're neat. Heck, I picked up a Lada repair manual in the original Russian.
