I had the same idea of rebuilding my 86's transaxel after I was told my "Layshaft bearings" were going ! This by a professional mechanic that was reccommended to me as a "Saab specialist" . He made this wonderful diagnosis after just driving the car around the block !
I purchased the official Saab Manual Transmission Manual and went to work .
I found (1)There is no layshaft as such .
(2)I could not proceed very far into the dismantling process before I was stymied . The main case did not want to come apart !
(3)When I took the trans back to my mechanic he pounded a large screwdriver into the split with a heavy hammer . "Don't force it just use a bigger hammer" .
(4)I could not bear to watch .
(5)When I reinstalled the trans. and filled it with MTL, it all leaked out through a hairline crack in the bottom of the case !
