I'm in no way concerned about the rest of the car

I am very confident I can choose a car that doesn't have anything serious wrong and can spot good maintenance. I'll be looking for a full service history, which is the norm here in the UK. I'll also be taking along a copy of your buying guidelines so I don't forget anything. I'm prepared to do some work on it before I hand it over to him.
My only concern is that he has a strong preference for an auto transmission (he doesn't absolutely insist, but I want him to enjoy the car). I have heard the horror stories and just want to establish whether this is confined to the highest-torque variants or is a general thing about the ZF box. I hear people saying how good the ZF is in other makes of car, so that tends to indicate that it is something about the application that makes them die.
